Hokay, We all know that in order to get a tag, you need to pass emissions... and in order to pass emissions you need to drive the car on the street, which is kind of hard without a tag (legally, anyways) Here's my dilemma... I have a brand new obd2 motor, that hasn't even been heat cycled that I want to get street legal. It currently has expired tags, and it missed emissions this past October cause it was down for repairs... I'm not sure if an engine that hasn't been fully broken in will pass emissions. Isn't there a certain drive cycle that it has to go through before the readiness monitors are able to be tested? Car has all its cats, EGR, and pretty much every single emissions related part still in tact. Whats the best way to go about getting the car street legal? Thanks

Far as I know, a new engine shouldn't have any issues passing emissions, especially if it's built to stock specs (which I'm guessing it is since it hasn't been run, i.e. no tuning).. There's really only one way to find out if it'll pass or fail, though, which is to go get it tested.
Also, as far as I know, if you get pulled over on the way there, you should be fine with telling them you're driving to do emissions and then directly back home. Technically, you could tow it, but.....

i was just always under the impression that every car had a readiness state that it has to reach. i think it may be called a drive cycle or something, which lets the ECU check out all the emissions things on the cars in various driving conditions.
i could be wrong though

Just drive the car ofr a few minutes prior to going to the emissions station. It is highly unlikely that you will get pulled over, but if you do, tell the officer the truth that you are going to emissions. If he wants to give you a ticket, which is unlikely but possible, just take the ticket and go on with yout driving and emissions testing. In that scenario, you take the emissions sheet to the judge with the ticket - no matter if is passes or fails. This shows that you were within the law.

As far as i know a fresh computer starts out with all codes good. So assuming everything is good once the motor starts up no codes will be triggered and you should be good to go.
If you start it up and get a check engine, don't waste your time going to emissions, you'll have to fix the code issue first. Or just move out to this area where you don't have to worry about that junk.
Long story short there is no drive/cycle time, by the time you get out of the neighboorhood the computer will have flashed a code if there is an issue.

Eric, you're right. Every car has to be driven a minimum of 50-75 miles to cycle through it's readiness tests. Every car varies so your's could be less or it could be more. Drive 50 miles, have it tested and you'll find out. Anytime the CEL has been erased, the car has to be driven. We have an application which will put it through it's readiness test in as little as ~30 minutes but it wouldn't be worth your drive. I deal with this on a daily basis so I know what I'm talking about.
If you do get pulled over, as long as your courteous and explain what your's doing, they should let you off with a warning even driving with an expired tag. You'd be more likely to get pulled over without a tag than with an expired tag.

You can always have a friend or relative follow behind you to the testing as well.

If he wants to provide you a solution, which is unlikely but possible, just take the solution and go on with yout generating and pollutants examining. In that situation, you take the pollutants piece to the assess with the solution - no issue if is moves or neglects. This demonstrates that you were within the law.
