30 years from now… you’ll wish you had done it today. Whether you’re 9, going with your dad. Or 19 & going with your buddies. Maybe 39 going with your son/daughter. OR – 45 going with your dad again. These moments in motorsports… right now… are the good ol’ days. This was the 24 Hours of Daytona 2025.
I grew up just North of Daytona…
This was back in the ’80s & early ’90s. My dad was always around the PCA & Brumos in Jacksonville. Hell, he’s still got the same Porsche 911SC he had back then. When I was a kid, he would bring me to the 24 Hours at Daytona. I still have the hats…. in particular… the hat the Geoff Brabham literally blew off my head with his #83 Nissan GTP as I stood on the fence at start/finish. It shaped my love for cars forever. And it shaped HOW I love cars.
I can only explain it like this…
There are ‘those moments’, those snap-shots… that you take with you forever. In hindsight… that’s probably why I’m so old-school, hard-headed, & romantic about sports cars. I loved this race so much as a kid, that I wrote about it in school… all the time. Somehow I’d find a way to work it into nearly every school project. My 6th grade teacher wrote in my yearbook – that I had a talent for writing & I should develop it. Arguably, I did lol. And today, I’m so grateful for those experiences as a kid. I have literally no idea what kind of dude I’d be today without ‘em. This year – I got to take my dad to the 24 Hours at Daytona, courtesy of Lexus Racing. It’s weirdly full-circle… but also exactly the same. I ran into my friends, Sam Igel (the ultra-talented guy who took these photos) and Mack Williams (who has an awesome RX7 we featured). They were at the 24 Hours of Daytona for the first time. These are full-grown dudes who came-up in the car scene, but not this side of it. And I saw in their eyes as night fell over Daytona Speedway… that same mind-blown excitement I felt as a kid. Those same unexplainable goosebump moments that come from picturesque lighting, high-banks, sunsets/rises, palm trees, baffling speed, and mesmerizing sounds. And that’s why I’m saying… do it today. Whether it’s with friends, family, whether you’re the parent, or the child, or both. Don’t let these moments pass by, because they continue to shape you LONG after the moment is over. The Rolex 24 at Daytona is more than a race, it’s more than a race car… it’s the very essence of the PASSION of motorsport.
