This is the Mazda CX-50 Hybrid. It’s the most efficient model in the CX-50 lineup. But – the hybrid does come with a cost to the driving experience. See, the Mazda CX-50 2.5 TURBO is exceptional. It gives you the versatility of a crossover (and/or wagon)… but the turbo-version of the CX-50 still undoubtedly retains the sharp, engaging, and surprisingly refreshing driving experience of a sportier vehicle. In short, Mazda knocked it out of the park with the 2.5 Turbo. It’s got true Mazda DNA. And somehow, it really seems to fly under the mainstream radar as to how good the CX-50 Turbo really is.
Whereas the CX-50 Hybrid…
It’s an appliance. Driving the CX-50 Hybrid is noticeably more disengaging & forgettable than the turbo variant. The body feels heavier & less agile/direct paired with the hybrid. And the CVT transmission is as appealing as soggy fries. But – in the Hybrid’s defense, it does rake-in the MPGs (~35mpg real-world). Unfortunately those MPGs come at the cost of mediocrity. If you’re primary need/goal is efficiency… then the Mazda CX-50 Hybrid might be your ticket. And – also be sure to look at the Toyota Rav4 Hybrid because it’s the same powertrain. BUT – if you’re willing to give up some of those MPGs (~10) for a less muddied powertrain & a noticeably better driving experience, than I highly recommend driving the Mazda CX-50 Turbo. The nice thing is: You can go to a Mazda dealership, test-drive the Hybrid & Turbo models back-to-back… and make the best decision for you.
