I’m going to quickly sum up the 2017 Volkswagen Jetta GLI. As I mentioned before on the 2016 model….this is the best Jetta you can buy. The other trim levels are just plain disappointing across all categories whereas the GLI is the redeemer. The champ. The flagship that helps the Jetta model from sinking into dismal plasticky oblivion.
Not much has changed on the 2017 model. It is still powered by the glorious 2.0 liter turbo’d 4 making 210 horsepower and 207 ft/lbs of torque paired to the fine 6 speed DSG. This has to be one of the most underrated drivetrains in all of the automotive world. We will look back one day and the 2.0 liter EA888 will be listed among the best engines ever produced. It’s also fuel efficient. I got 26 mpg mostly in the city…with my foot buried into the firewall about 60% of the time.
If you are in need of a fun midsize car this should be on the top of your list. Yes the Camry XSE V6 and Accord V6 are underrated sleepers but they also come in at thousands of dollars more. For $28,000 you can get the GLI with roughly the same space, better fuel economy, better seats and that glorious engine and transmission. You can’t really go wrong with that.
