I put some E3 spark plugs in my stand-up jet ski, and the results were undeniable. In the PWC / Jet Ski world, NGK seems to be the go-to default spark plug, and NGK makes a good spark plug no doubt. But I’ve got a buddy (Chris LaCouture) who’s an engineer at E3 Spark Plugs in Jacksonville FL. The guy’s a Toyota nut. From Vintage Toyotas to modern, sports cars to 4x4s, he’s even got a Toyota boat with a 1UZ V8! Anyway, I hit him up because we bought some E3 spark plugs for my wife’s Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro & I thought he’d appreciate that lol. During the conversation he mentioned…
“Man if you put E3 spark plugs in those 2-stroke jet skis ya’ll ride… you’ll see even MORE of a difference than the 4Runner.”
Ok bet! For reference – the jet ski is a 1996 Kawasaki 750sxi: 2-stroke, carbureted, stock engine, & regularly ridden. We’re using E3 part-number E3.31. Jet skis are a really harsh environment for spark plugs overall. You’re on/off the throttle repeatedly, usually from idle to wide-open. Here’s what happened with the E3 spark plugs versus NGK…
Significantly faster starts…
With the E3 spark plugs, cold-starts fire just about immediately… which they never did before on my ski. It’s like hitting an un-pause button. Likewise – restarts when you’re out on the water are less laggy.
More midrange power…
The most exciting difference – is improved acceleration out of a corner or off a buoy. The power comes on a little stronger, and noticeably smoother. Don’t take this as science, but from the tray it feels like the jet ski got 5-10% better everywhere. 5-10% faster, fresher, stronger, cleaner, and happier all around.
For such a minimal investment, I would absolutely recommend trying E3 spark plugs in your 2-stroke/carbureted PWC or jet ski…
People get weirdly stuck in their ways with spark plugs. Man that’s cool no one’s forcing you lol. But it’s a $20 purchase (total) with a 4-minute install… it’s not an irreversible procedure lol. Try ‘em & let Chris @E3 know how they do.
Because of the harsh environment (and for obvious reasons), E3 does not offer their standard vehicle 5yr/100,000-mile warranty for power-sports. Rule of thumb is to replace jet ski plugs every ride-season, but that’s usually because of the failures of other plugs on the market. E3 spark plus are built for a longer lifespan, but again, at 20-bucks, why not just swap ’em every season.
