Dear Auto Industry: Make affordable, inspiring cars again! You’re freaking BLOWING IT! And as a car-lover, it’s the hardest thing to watch. Just this month we’ve seen Ferrari reveal the most utterly flaccid vehicle of their history (the Luce). And Ford, GM, & Penske went to the White House to try and get laws passed that keep us from working on our own cars. Let that sink in! It feels like an alternate reality, and it’s frankly unAmerican! This mentality needs to be torched out. Either the CEOs fight the legislation (and educate the enthusiasts to do the same), or we find new CEOs… or we find new car companies. Earn our business or lose it… but you’re not gonna force us to buy overpriced, locked-down, uninspiring junk.

Affordable, interesting cars bring young people into car culture…

That’s so obvious when you look at icon car models & movements through automotive history. They are the gateway to making more passionate, more talented, more informed, more loyal consumers. And better moments behind the wheel. Mobility is not the same thing as driving. And if carmakers lose the invaluable brand loyalty they always earned & enjoyed, they WILL lose their industry to China. At this point, it’s almost good riddance.

Let’s be real – they’ve already lost the loyalty…

Just look at the absolute enthusiast fanaticism that Volkswagen & Honda cultivated over the eras. Enthusiasts flew their flags higher than any commercial marketing ever could. We vigilantly recommended their cars to friends, family, coworkers… anyone who slightly mentioned they might be car shopping. And VW/Honda gave that up to become an appliance not worth talking about. So utterly out of touch….
