Porsche Mission S vs Tesla Roadster. As a sports fan – there’s nothing like a good battle between two teams. It doesn’t matter the sport, nor does it really matter the outcome in the grand scheme of things. But you remember where you sat, who you sat with, and how you felt watching a good match. The emotion of it all. That’s why we pay ridiculous amounts for season tickets… all the way to TV subscriptions. Because we want to feel something in us (in anyway or form)… in a world where a lot of what we feel is not so good. Sports give us an opportunity to get away from the nastiness of life as we cheer on our teams and boo our opponents.
One of my biggest sports-watching memories was watching the Michael Jordan Flu Game. I remember the wings I ordered, who I was with, and how it made me feel. And yes – this grown man cried when I saw Scottie Pippen hugging Jordan into the Chicago Bulls huddle. I don’t know why… I just did. It was the emotion of it all. Priceless! So much emotion. I also temporarily forgot for a while I was not doing so well in school, I had just lost my job, and I think my parents wanted to send me to a diamond mine to work.

Car enthusiasts, cults, and anyone in between paying attention last Friday night…

Found themselves in a similar sports battle. Porsche officially debuted the remarkable Mission S, and Tesla finally debuted their long awaited Roadster. While these brands are nothing alike, we got officially introduced to two range-topping concept vehicles that debuted within hours of each other. And with that comes discussion.

The Porsche debuted first in NYC…

With pics in the same exact location as their 550 Spyder 73 years ago. Germans sure know how to play heritage right, and they got the traditional debut right. Some say it pays homage to the legendary 959 – which I can see. The interior of the Porsche Mission S is striking and purposeful. What I see – is a thoughtful exercise inside and out of Porsche’s past and future. Another future classic. There were countless videos of the vehicle from the usual car debut invitees, many with sound – a sound that is rumored to be a Flat-8! I am still completely enamored with it. If I could… I would. It’s that lovely to me. Car enthusiasts were instantly discussing and posting all about the Mission S and how it would drive… but not how it would fly.

Cue the Tesla Roadster…

The Tesla Roadster has people talking about flying more than driving. Well – it made people think it flies with one of the most memorable and creative PR stunts in a long time. You might not even know what the vehicle looks like… but you likely heard about Tesla’s flying car within the past week. It didn’t matter that the car looked completely different to the one shown 10 years ago. And it didn’t matter what the specs were – and that the fine print states this is all for show & concept.

What Tesla got completely right…

Is how it made people feel – from its rabid fanbase, to car enthusiasts, to even people who despise Tesla. Next thing you know – we were inundated with memes of every kind – with flying Tesla’s, Toasters and Tulips. It was a fun moment, and people continue to have fun with it (though we likely spent another 10-million gallons of freshwater with Data Centers making those memes).

Tesla & the Tesla Roadster isn’t necessarily for me.

The interior is another iPad centric thing. I’m not a fan of the ’70s Lamborghini exterior, and I prefer my manager doesn’t look for legitimate reasons in court to call me the N word. That’s okay though, I saw quite a few people posting their deposit pictures, and The Tesla Roadster absolutely hits its target market. It makes people feel super emotional – which is a good thing! So next came natural discussions…

Who did it better – Porsche or Tesla.

I am being relatively kind when I say ‘discussions’… we were all arguing/fighting like rabid dogs. But this was one hell of a sporting exhibition we witnessed – that’s for sure. And while not direct competitors at all, we saw two distinct teams emerge. Both models are range-topping vehicles. And the coincidence of the debuts being the same day & time ensured the internets got to fighting. And fight we did. The engagement was off the charts, and so were the emotions. We went from ‘which is the best car’ to ‘which is the best debut’. People stopped talking about the actual cars, and were mainly discussing which one people were talking about the most. And of course – some mentioned stock prices.
I’m sure Porsche and Tesla’s marketing departments (or maybe its an A.I department) high-fived themselves over dry-aged bone-in filet mignons as the data showed for 48 hours they were the talk of the internet town. I won’t forget typing my thoughts around and the feeling that Friday. Heck here I am writing about it now 4 days later – full of emotion. So much emotion I also temporarily forgot for a while I was studying online courses, I lost a client, and my parents now wished I owned a diamond mine.
