Lauren loves cars. HA – not to be confused with the YT channel Lauren loves Carbs… different Laurens lol. Although they might share the same loves IDK. But to set the stage – our Lauren Estelleis a graphic designer from Jacksonville, FL. Art is the lens through which she sees the world. And in 21st-century life where things tend to revolve around efficiency, cost-cutting, mass-production, planned-obsolescence, and AI… artistic spirits are searching for refuge. This is Lauren’s E30 with a Toyota 1JZ swap. But to finish the larger point…

Cars tend to naturally become a refuge for artistic-minded people…
Certain cars – the good ones – combine art & exhilaration. And that changes the game. It’s not art hung on a wall… it’s art with a driver’s seat. Pause – and think about what that truly means for a second. You’re not a spectator, you’re a participant in this art. It engages all your senses. Beauty and mechanics. Form and freedom.

Lauren is drawn to the timeless, evocative connection between art & the automobile…
In addition to the E30 BMW, her stable includes an air-cooled 911, ’71 C10, and Imola Yellow Audi S4 Avant. She says she just doesn’t get the same feeling from newer vehicles. Mainly because (generally speaking) they’ve distanced themselves from art. Both in form and connection. Maybe that’s the missing link. There’s just a cinematic allure, and/or mystique that’s lost in a bat-door, self-driving Tesla where the driver’s reading a book.

How Lauren’s E30 came to be…
Even though they’re rivals, the Porsche 911 & BMW E30 are kindred spirits. And both cars allowed the automotive landscape to flourish in their eras. Both cars were built for drivers… for moments! You know what I’m talking about? Not just efficiency… and not just Point-A to Point-B… but that magical space in-between. Porsche did it round; BMW did it square. But both did it passionately & artistically. Lauren already has a Porsche 964. She sold one once before… and vowed never to make that mistake again. Nevertheless, she was drawn to the square/compact BMWs of yesteryear. Lauren was smitten with 2002s, but the window on those cars was only getting smaller. And after driving an E30 BMW 325i at a track-day, she got hooked. Plus, E30s are generally more affordable, with more aftermarket solutions, etc. So Lauren scooped one up!

This 1989 BMW 325i was a decently good example…
Not flawless, but not junk. Just a surviving, running, $5,000 well-loved 5-speed E30. Lauren regularly drove the BMW in all its aura, and fell in love with its charm. Inevitably though, she started having to fix things – and kept having to throw money at it. This is where Ned Kuko comes back in the picture (check out his Soarer). See, Lauren and Ned are friends since teenagers. They have a shop together to work on their projects. And eventually Lauren reached the point where she sighed & said…
“Ned, how ‘bout we just fix this in a more economical way… by completely getting rid of the BMW part.”

Why a 1JZ…
Ned Kuko is a 1JZ guru, and he’ll JZ-swap anything that sits still long enough. So Ned planted the idea in Lauren’s head to 1JZ-swap her E30 BMW. And once she went down the rabbit holes & watched some videos, she just couldn’t get over it. One of their mutual friends had a wrecked/salvage Toyota JZX90. So Lauren bought the whole car for the engine, and was able to part everything else out & recoup her investment. Essentially – selling the parts paid for her engine… plus some.

This 1JZ-swapped E30 BMW makes 540 horsepower…
Which is more than enough for the kind of pure/retro/analog driving experience Lauren is after. The Ultimate Driving Machine… with the new benefit of Toyota reliability… and gaggles of boost. And most importantly…
Lauren had so much fun building it. She’s owned a lot of neat cars over the years, but she’d never done anything this extreme. Where you crossbreed engines & chassis… and make things work where no one ever intended. Honestly, she said it was easier than she thought, and embraced the process. Lauren & Ned got the E30 swapped & sorted in about a month. And get this: She hopped in, fired it up, did a little test drive, and then roadtripped it straight to Helen, GA – alone. That’s either totally crazy. Or it’s total freedom. Either completely stressful… or completely carefree. I guess it’s all in your mindset. And your mindset ultimately creates your reality.
