Believe it or not, this Honda S2000 was rejected from Bring A Trailer. Citing: The car was too modified. I guess that makes sense. But in hindsight, that was probably the best thing that could’ve happened to David Patterson. Because it made him say,
“You know what… on second thought I’ll just keep it.”
Selling the S2000 never felt like the right move anyway…
He’s owned the car for well over a decade, and he built it with forever in mind. But what can you say… he wanted more cars lol. Particularly, he always wanted a 4-door Integra Type-R. And he felt like the S2000 sensibly needed to be sold as a trade-off. But after the Bring A Trailer incident, he realized ‘sensibility’ had no part in this thought process, and he just bought the ITR in addition to the S2K. Atta boy David. Believe it or not, there’s an acquired wisdom there. I grew up under the wing of racers & car collectors, and if there’s one thing I’ve gathered from all their combined lifelong advice, it’s this: Never sell a car.
Unless your circumstances require it…
Selling a vehicle of this aura is a mistake. Because it’s likely that whatever an S2000 is worth today… it’s LESS than it’ll be worth tomorrow. And we’re not just talking financial value here… we’re talking spiritual value. Because while a lot of new vehicles brag about their acceleration, a lot of them go fast forgettably. So judge value by this: How alive does it make you feel?
Honda made the S2000 to make you FEEL something…
I can’t overstate that enough. Unfortunately, a lot of people don’t have the exposure to grasp what they’re missing here. The masses have become too willing to trade raw exhilaration… for numb comfort & convenience. It’s become the auto-industry standard. But what kind of trade is that… honestly folks.
As a people, our buying habits ultimately have consequences…
And as a result, we’re looking at a modern population that’s rapidly losing valuable & rewarding skillsets… for an increasing dependency on safety sensors & nanny devices. It’s a death-by-1000-cuts situation. We don’t realize what we’re losing on a day-to-day, or year-to-year basis. But across the board, it’s becoming evident that there’s correlation between tech-dependency and a less inspired, less fulfilled population… with more dissatisfaction & debt.
As car culture, I wish we were able to reach-out & relate to the masses a little more…
Because what if your commute was the spark of your day? What if it invigorated & inspired you. And what if… it gave you a clarity & energy that reached into all other aspects of your life?
Cars like the Honda S2000…
Were created to engage, inspire, and awaken our souls. Look at it like this: Transportation is a flat boring trombone note. You ‘transport’ Amazon packages – whoopie. DRIVING however… that’s a symphony.
Pay attention, and you’ll notice even carmakers themselves have been replacing the word ‘driving’ with the new word ‘mobility’… taking the actual verb & sense of physicality out of it. Yep…
The truly hands-on, take-control aspects of driving are becoming unnecessary and/or obsolete…
But it doesn’t mean they’ve lost their appeal, or their sense of raw unfiltered exhilaration. In fact I’d argue the contrary… that real driving just gets more authentic as technology pulls us away from it. I’d encourage you to disconnect from the new ‘connected’. Scoop up the cars that make your heart race. Let them inspire & shape you. Modify them to the point where Bring A Trailer rejects you lol. Make drive a verb. And join the tribe of the unplugged.
