E3 Spark Plugs

There’s something unexplainably exciting about pointing your vehicle down a dirt trail and leaving the pavement behind. But here’s the thing I learned the hard way: The wrong vehicle can turn that picture into a stressful, expensive ordeal.

I remember my first major off-road trip in a borrowed, underprepared SUV. Let’s just say we spent more on towing than on gas.

Choosing the right vehicle isn’t about getting the shiniest or toughest-looking one. It’s about an honest match. And for good reason, too.

According to Consumer Affairs, 63% of Americans reported some level of buyer’s remorse, mostly because the experience didn’t match their expectations. Of course, this includes car buyers. This article is to make sure you’re in the other 37%.

Let’s get started.

Define What “Off-Road” Means for You…

First things first, what does off-road mean to you? You need to be clear about that. Are you thinking “Hell’s Gate” in Moab, or is it just that your daily route takes you away from standard paved roads?

These scenarios require completely different vehicles.

If your daily driving takes you past stretches of bad roads, rocks, deep mud, and slippery stuff, then you don’t really need those monsters you see on Four Wheeler TV.

Bottom line? Be realistic about where you’ll actually drive, not where you imagine driving after watching YouTube videos at 2 AM.

Choose the Right Drivetrain…

This is where things get technical. Most modern SUVs use All-Wheel Drive (AWD), which is great for driving through rough stretches of road to work. For serious trails, however, go for a true Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) system.

Why? Because a true 4WD has a “low-range” setting. This is what will let you crawl over obstacles at walking speed without cooking your clutch or transmission.

A good real-world example of these two options was the 2025 Rebelle Rally. While a 2025 Jeep Gladiator took the top 4×4 spot, a 2025 Subaru Forester Hybrid won the X-Cross class. So, what does this prove? That AWD is enough for many trails, but 4WD wins when things get vertical.

  • AWD: Best for snow, rain, and maintained dirt roads.
  • 4WD: Essential for deep sand, mud, and rock crawling.

Ground Clearance and Angles…

When buying an off-road capable car, a lot of people focus on engine size. That’s all good and fine, but with off-road, it’s often about what you don’t scrape. This means ground clearance. That’s the space between your underbelly and the ground. More is better.

Then there are the angles:

  • Approach Angle: Can you drive up a slope without smashing the front bumper?
  • Departure Angle: Can you back down without catching the rear?
  • Breakover Angle: Will your undercarriage clear the peak of a hill?

A powerful SUV with a long, low front-end like the Range Rover Sport SV is a liability on a rocky trail. Height and geometry trump horsepower every time.

Reliability and Ease of Repair…

Modern cars are full of electronics, which is fine if you like all those bells and whistles.

However, fancy tech can be a nightmare if they fail in the middle of nowhere. Simple, proven platforms win because they’re fixable with basic tools and common parts. In fact, older or popular models without complex electronics can be fixed with a wrench and duct tape. And they have parts everywhere, too.

Newer vehicles might need a laptop and a dealer trip for even minor issues. I’m not saying buy a 1985 Bronco, but understand that simplicity has real value in remote areas.

Also, don’t forget the ease of maintenance. Keeping your car in top-notch condition not only ensures its longevity but also saves you from surprise repair costs, says the team at Bergman’s Auto. And you’ll also get a good price should you one day decide to sell.

Fuel Type, Range, and Running Costs…

You also want to think about running costs, especially fuel and parts. And this typically means choosing between diesel or petrol.

Here’s the thing: diesel engines mean more torque at low RPMs — ideal for crawling over obstacles. They’re also more fuel-efficient for long-distance overlanding. The downside? You’re looking at high diesel prices and more expensive maintenance.

Still, a lot of buyers see the value. Diesel-powered vehicles made up about 47% of the U.S. off-road vehicle market in 2024. Plenty of drivers are willing to pay extra for that low-end pulling power.

And gasoline engines? This is also a great option thanks to its lower upfront cost. They’re also easier to maintain, and of course, gasoline is available everywhere.

So which one is right for you? The one that fits your kind of off-road life best.

Off-Road Modification…

You should also think about aftermarket support and off-road modification.

This actually matters a lot, even if you don’t intend to add modifications immediately. Needs change, and then you find that you need them.

If you buy a popular model like a Wrangler or a Bronco, you have access to thousands of parts and can upgrade piece by piece. With a vehicle that has limited aftermarket support, you’re stuck.

Test Drive…

Finally, don’t be in a hurry to sign any paperwork without first taking the vehicle for a test drive, preferably on actual trails.

Pay attention to:

  • Visibility
  • Turning radius
  • Suspension feel
  • Traction in loose dirt

Take visibility, for instance. A June 2025 IIHS study found that visibility within a 10-meter radius has declined by as much as 58% in some popular SUVs over the last two decades. Why? Because of higher, blunter hood designs.

So, drive the car off the pavement, and trust your gut over specifications.

Final Thoughts…

When choosing an off-road vehicle, forget about the biggest engine or flashy bodywork. The goal is to match the vehicle to your real needs. This means being honest about where you’ll drive, and trusting instinct over hype.

And you need to take your time, too. Don’t rush things. Talk to people who actually use their vehicles off-road and get their opinions on your choices. The right truck is out there; you just need patience to find it.
