There are currently 3 core versions of the Mazda CX50: The 2.5 S non-turbo, the 2.5 Turbo, and the Hybrid. 1) I’ve haven’t driven the non-turbo. 2) The Mazda CX-50 Turbo is exceptional. And 3) The Mazda CX50 Hybrid is just fine. I realize that sounds harsh, so let me explain…

Mazda CX-50 Hybrid…
The Mazda CX50 Hybrid is your typical hybrid experience. Nothing wrong with that… but nothing particularly exciting or romantic about it either. In fact, it’s a shared/borrowed Toyota Rav4 Hybrid powertrain in Mazda packaging. So think of it as a refined Rav4 Hybrid. In short – the CX-50 Hybrid was made to deliver miles-per-gallon, not smiles-per-gallon. So if you prioritize fuel efficiency over driving experience, get the CX-50 Hybrid.

Mazda CX-50 2.5 Turbo…
If you’re willing to give up some fuel economy for a better, more engaging driving experience, get the CX-50 2.5 Turbo. Instead of Mid-30s MPGs, you’ll get mid-20s. And you’ll probably want to use premium fuel (for full performance). But when asked, I always tell people not to sleep on the Mazda CX-50 with the turbocharged 2.5. It’s perhaps the best in its segment, with a surprisingly dynamic driving experience. And it does NOT use a soul-stealing, failure-prone CVT transmission (like the CX-50 Hybrid AND many competitors in the segment).

But whether you choose the Mazda CX-50 Hybrid or Turbo…
The Mazda CX-50 delivers a sharp chassis all-around – with sophisticated, coherent, flowing design elements. Mazda understands how to instinctively infuse the driver into their cars. Plus, the CX-50 hits that Goldilocks just right size where it’s versatile, adaptable, and packable… but also athletic, maneuverable & responsive. It’s a vehicle you can easily live with – not too small – but you’re also not driving a cargo ship. All CX-50s feature AWD and enough ground clearance to get you through the elements, although the AWD systems are different in the Hybrid versus the Turbo. I also appreciate the Trail driving mode.

Whether you choose efficiency (Hybrid), or driving experience (Turbo)…
The Mazda CX-50 is one of the strongest contenders in its segment. Don’t let it fly under your radar. But, if I knew you personally, I’d really steer you towards the turbo. What do you expect from a car enthusiast lol.
